Forevermore {Animal and pet portraiture by Pat}

My portraits are painted from photos provided by pet owners. The more visual information I have, the more accurate a portrait I can create. I work from a 5x7 photo and, if possible, an 8x10. I need a well lit, in-focus close up of your pet. Mailed photos are preferred for their clarity over emailed photos. Multiple photos are welcomed. Below, my suggestions for taking photos of your pets:
-
The closer the better. Have your pet fill the frame as much as possible, up to 2/3's is best. A 3/4 silhouette is usually more pleasing than a head-on photo, however head on can be great too. Head and chest photos work well. Sharp, clear photos of eyes and face are crucial in capturing the unique personality of your pets. Keep in mind your favorite pet looks: ears droopy or pulled up; an excited or dignified expression; peaceful and soft or intense and alert. The best perspective from which to photograph is eye level with your pet
-
Be patient and take as many photos as you can to ensure your chances of creating that perfect picture. Animals work well with treats, or toys to capture their attention. Think about those looks / poses that you really love

Natural lighting is usually best. "Golden Hour" (early morning or late afternoon) are great times of day to photograph your pet outdoors. Your photo will show the most detail if the light source is behind your camera, or off to the side. Avoid light coming behind your pet. If you photograph indoors, try to get one side of your pet in natural light, such as from a window. Flash is not recommended. Take more notice of the light when photographing black and dark-colored pets since light is crucial to bringing out the highlights and tones of your pet's coat and any distinguishing features.
